TED video notes

  • population pyramids are powerful population predictors
  • demographic transition has 3 stages
  • #1 is a pre-industrial society #2 is an industrial society and stage #3 is a post-industrial society
  • industrialization= the increase of factories and jobs to produce goods on a much larger scale by using machines
  • in developing countries workforce works for a lesser salary
  • The time of the baby boom in the United States was when this country was at the peak of it's industrialization
  • after industrialization begins, life expectancy increases and child mortality decreases
  • post industrialization societies have lower birth rates because women have access to birth control and in these countries, women have more opportunities. It is more uncommon in these places rather than developing countries for women to start families at a younger age rather than go to college or have a job
  • industrialization causes movement from rural areas to cities because of the jobs provided there
  • post industrialization societies have low birth and death rates
  • the United States is in the post- industrialization stage

Kiva Discussion (EC)

Kiva is a place where you can loan money to people in need around the world. This website has a 97% repayment rate. This is mostly because the people who you can loan money to have to interviewed, they cant just be on the site. I think this website is a great idea because loaning as little as 25 dollars to someone who could really use the money makes you feel like a better person. There are a wide variety of people and things they need to raise money for all around the world. Kiva has people from 84 different countries signed up to gain loans. Some people need piglets to help keep their family farm growing, some need materials to build a fence to protect a crop, but there are some people who need money to start a business. When the people apply to get a loan, they have a set amount of money they are trying to raise for a certain purpose and a time of which they can be on the site to get loans. Once they receive their money, they have "pay days" when they have to repay a certain amount of money to Kiva. On these "pay days", the people who loaned money will receive an email saying how much was paid back to them, and in the end, you usually get all your money back. Then you can loan to someone else in need. I really like this set up and i think it is a great way to try and improve the world. Hopefully i can loan to people in need and get to hear the success stories like many others do!

test day again

Mr. Schick wasn’t in class today, and we took a test. I think that I did pretty good on the test. Part of the test was on knowing how to navigate cia.gov factbook. This part wasn’t hard because we had done a lot of practice with it during this unit. The types of things we needed to know was where to find population, growth rate, death rate, total fertility rate, GDP per capita, amount of population without electricity. We had to complete this portion of the test in 15 minutes, then we had to close our computers. The rest of the test wasn’t that difficult. I only remember a few of the questions. But they were mostly about these topics: population pyramids, push and pull forces, and more vocab on our teacher’s blog. We had to write about two specific push forces and two specific pull forces. My two pull forces were 1. Spain has high unemployment levels 2. Egypt has less women’s rights. My two pull forces were 1. United states has religious freedom and 2. Canada has a good healthcare system. Overall I think I did well on the test, we will just have to wait and see.

What to know for test

  • how to navigate the cia.gov factbook
  • net migration rate: the difference between the number of people entering and leaving a country during a year. found by entering-leaving
  • life  expectancy: the average number of years to be lived by a group of people born in the same year
  • population growth mostly takes place in developing nations
  • developing nations are poor and not totally set up in  infrastructure
  • rate of natural increase is produced by subtracting the death rate from the birth rate aka. birth-death
  • for a population to remain the same, the TFR( total fertility rate) must be 2.1
  • there are three basic shapes to population pyramids
  • christmas tree is for developing countries, they have a high birth rate and low life expectancy
  • box shape is for developed population with slow pop. growth, meaning it has low infant mortality and long life expectancy
  • cup shape is for developed nation with shrinking pop., has a low birth rate
  • some specific examples of push forces: 1. Egypt doesn't give women all the rights that men have 2. Spain has rising unenployment levels
  • some specific examples for pull forces: 1. Qatar's oil business offers many job opportunities for men 2. the good healthcare programs in Canada
  • in population pyramids, men are on the left and women are on the right

Population/Demographic project notes

Today in class we presented our group projects. Also, Ellie brought in food. She brought these cute polka dot napkins, halo oranges, bagels and cream cheese, and chocolate chip cookies. Her group went first today. The two countries that their presentation was on was Qatar and Haiti. Next, my group went. Maddy and I are the two people in my group. The two countries we researched for our project are Spain and Egypt. I think Maddy and I did pretty good on presenting our project, so I hope we get a good grade.

Group 1 Notes:  faith, ellie, valerie, madison
  • Haiti has more people than Qatar
  • Haiti is a developing country. Struck by many natural disasters. High birth rate
  • Qatar's main industry is oil. It is a  mainly rich developed country, and it is predominately male
  • Haiti's population is made up of 11.2% children between the age of one day and 4 years old
  • Ready access to birth control changes the amount of children being born, especially in developing countries

POP Quiz Retake

Basically Mr. Schick gave us a pop quiz the other day in class. And we have had one in his class before, but like everyone freaks out when there is some sort of quiz. Ever. Not saying that i enjoy quizzes or that i feel prepared for pop quizzes, because im not, but it is high school. You're gonna have to take tests. Anyways, we took this quiz but we only had 10 seconds to answer each question. And i do agree that it was hard to get the correct answer in ten seconds, but that is the way the test is written, that's what the teacher said to do. If he thought that we couldn't do well, he wouldn't have given it to us. I got an 80% which is not what i wanted but it was a small grade so it was ok i guess. But, after the whole class complained about the quizzes and how everyone has F's... Mr. Schick was so so so nice and let us retake the SAME EXACT QUIZ! I was not expecting that, but hey i won't complain. So after taking the quiz again i got a 100 so that helped my grade a bit. :) Oh and i know my teachers birthday now! Sorry if this blog doesn't really make sense... I ran 5 miles yesterday for track and was so tired when i got home yesterday and i didn't do my blog then, and i had 2 soccer games to day in the freezing cold one at 9 am so i had to get up at 6:30 and another later... So here i am 9:47 on saturday night i just got home, but hey i did my blog!:)

Our First Group Project

Maddy Sterling
Kelsie Barnard
11-9-17
Honors Human Geography Population Pyramid Project

  1. Why does Egypt have a higher birth rate than Spain?
Egypt has a high birth rate because it is a developing nation and its life expectancy has been slightly increasing. There has not been a substantial increase in female labor participation during this past period in Egypt, so more women are available to have children. Also, Egypt is a developing country so the economy will need more young people to work the labor jobs that older people can’t.
  1. Is Spain a developing nation with a slow growth rate, a developed nation with a slow population growth, or a developed nation with a shrinking population? Well, Spain is a developed population with both a slow population growth and a shrinking population. Also, due to high unemployment problems many economic migrants from South America and Eastern Europe are leaving the country.
  2. Based on the population pyramid above, is Spain’s population more likely to increase or decrease within the next few decades? The population in Spain is going to decrease because the birth rate has significantly become smaller. Also, a large number of Spaniards have emigrated to find better work. Although the total fertility rate is supposed to rise slightly, from 1.33 to 1.38, the number of births will fall because there will be fewer women of childbearing age.
  3. What shape is Egypt’s population pyramid in, and what does it mean? Egypt pyramid is in a christmas tree shape. This means that there is a high birth rate and             that each age group higher in the pyramid decreases in population size. The population decreases the higher up in the pyramid because Egypt has a shorter life expectancy at 73 years old. Their Life expectancy is 142 oldest in the world.

At the top of our list is the Unicef organization because they put a lot of effort into taking care of the children of the world. They know the children are important because they are the future minds of the world. Unicef gives vaccines to children and they save approximately 3 million per year, they provide water to those in need, and they raise money to help starving children get their next meals. Next in our list is The Hunger Project because they make improvements in areas such as health, literacy, education, gender-based violence, food security, income and local democracy. Also, they provide food security to many poor people in the world who are unsure where their next meal will come from, or if they get another meal. Third rank in our list is The Adventure Project because they help communities with the items to make the food. For example, they provide stoves that do not emit harmful smoke. This organization also adds irrigation pumps so that the families can grow more crops in a harvest which will make less children go to bed hungry. And last on our list, but still an amazing program is Bread for Israel. This group collects donations and each dollar gives a loaf of bread to a child in need in Israel.

Population Pyramids

Continuing our discussion and note taking from yesterday, we learned about population pyramids. Population Pyramids show the population number or percent of men and women in an area(country). To make the graph more accurate men and women are split up into two different sides and each are split up in to several age groups five years apart. Youngest people at the bottom of the pyramid and oldest at the top. There tends to be three primary different shapes one being a Christmas tree, another a box, and a cup. The Christmas tree indicates that the bottom of the pyramid is significantly wider than the top and tends to slim out. Christmas tree population pyramids show up for developing Countries. These countries’ growth rates are slow, there is a high birth rate, and there is a short life expectancy. Some developing countries include Namibia and Bangladesh. Box shape pyramids mean that each age group has around the same amount of people. Box population pyramids tend to be for developed nations where there is usually low infant mortality, a slow population growth, and a long life expectancy. Sweden and the United States are two great examples for this. In class we started the third type of population pyramid, the cup, but we didn’t finish. However, I do know that this population pyramid represents a country with a low birth rate and has a shrinking population which causes the larger portion of it’s population to be with the older people living in the country rather than the younger people. If you are interested in viewing your country's population pyramid and what it means, or even the world's pyramid, check out this website! www.populationpyramid.net

That's a Wrap! Peace out
