Value Theory has two parts:
ethics- the branch of philosophy that studies and evaluates human conduct
aesthetics- the branch of philosophy that studies the nature of beauty

Philosophy crashcourse notes

  • philosophy= what is the nature of philosophy itself
    • Why do you do what you do 
    • why do you think what you think
    • why do you feel what you feel 
  • some of these are beyond our ability to answer, but we should still ask the questions
  • a way of approaching the world
  • mythos- storytelling
  • philos- science
  • philosophia= the love of wisdom
  • philosophy= the academic study of anything (back in time of ancient greece this is what it meant)
  • Plato's academy
  • Aristotle's Lyceum- math, biology, physics, poetry,, political science ect..
  • philosophy came to be understood more as a way of thinking about the questions,, not necessarily the answers given
  • what is the world like?
  • what is the nature of reality?
  • is the world just made up of matter and energy, or is there something else going on

Philosophers

Socrates:
  • looked to science and logic(not the mythological gods) for explanations of how the world worked
  • socrates wanted people to think for themselves
  • the socratic method fostered ccritical thinking
  • "i cannot teach anybody. i can only make them think"
  • "the unexamined life is not worth living"
  • death by drinking poison hemlock, could've escapes, but he stood before the law
  • he was charged with impiety(disrespecting gods), and corrupting the youth of Athens
  • he never apologized for what he did, said he should get rewarded
Plato
  • was a student and follower of Socrates
  • apology back then was an explanation for something
  • he wrote out Socrates' teaching, and described his trial in Apology
  • republic was socrates' discussion of justice and the ideal state- one of the most influential books on philosophy ever written
Aristotle
  • was a student of plato
  • he helped foster the idea of athens as an intellectual destination
  • his school- the Lyceum- focused on cooperative research- building on the knowledge gathered from all over the world
  • wanted everything anyone would ever need to know be available in Athens
  • logic-physics-biology
  • ethies-politics-rhetoric
  • motion-theatre-poetry
  • metaphysics-phycology-dreams ect...
  • he also tutored Alexander the Great

new unit ish

YAY!! So in class today we got our tests back... And i got a 98%!! Im super happy that i only got one question wrong. It was about like what verse did Homer write in, and i said iambic pentameter because i knew Shakespeare wrote in that. I just guessed, oh well. Also, i finished my note on pg 134-141 in the textbook on friday so i didnt have to do anything today. While everyone else finished up their notes, i took a well deserved nap during class. Thanks!

Democracy and Greece's Golden Ages

I am very sorry. I took wonderful notes in class today. I was typing them out and i went to copy and paste it into word to see how many words i had... It all deleted. I am literally in tears right now. I am not going to retype it because i spent a lot of time and now i'm depressed. I would still appreciate the full points becuase i tried really hard to be a good student and get all of my homework done after school right now before ssaturday started. KDKJHSDUFHVADS CDSKAI... I actually just realized that this is probably 200 words soooo.. But if u would like to know if im lying, i have witnesses. U can ask me and i will bring them to you ASAP. have a wonderful weekend

Review for Greece test

We reviewed the huge powerpoint for our unit on Ancient Greece. Only about half of the class was paying attention, but i think reviewing helped me even though we already took notes on the powerpoint. This review helped me remember just how much this unit covers and reminded me what subjects are going to be on the test tomorrow. After class, i made a great quizlet to help me study tonight.
