Notes:
·
At a local scale, such as an urban neighborhood,
geographers tend to see unique features
·
At the global scale, encompassing the entire
world, geographers tend to see broad patterns
·
The group of people who came up with the phrase,
“think global act local” meant that the environment was being harmed by processes
such as global warming that was in Global scale. It could be improved by local
actions by each person. For example, ride a bike instead of a car sometimes.
·
Geography matters because it can explain human
actions at all scales, from local to global.
·
There are also national and international scales
·
Globalization is a process that involves the
entire world and results in making something worldwide in scope
·
For example, the process of promoting technology
such as tv, phones, and computers has spread worldwide. Now there is only a
handful of the world’s population that hasn’t seen a tv
·
Which means that the scale of the world is “shrinking”
in the ability of the person, object, idea to interact with a person, idea in
another place
·
Since people are now being put into global
economy and culture, the world and people in it are becoming more uniform and independent
Thinking
Geographically: From Local to Global
In class I looked at some everyday objects of mine to see
where they were made in the world. My laptop, phone, water bottle, and planner
were all made in China. Then I thought about some everyday objects I use at
home in my daily routine and thought where they were originated. My toaster is
from KitchenAid, which originated in America, my tv from Samsung is from South
Korea, my bedframe is from Ikea which originated in Sweden! I think it is so
cool that the stuff we use every day has come from all different parts of the
world.
